OBX ~ NC ~ 1

RIetc12 s

Driving toward the Outer Banks, we first crossed Roanoke Island.

We made a brief stop at the Elizabethan Gardens . . .

RIetc6 s

. . . because I wanted to get some photographs of the blue hydrangeas.

The attendant graciously allowed us to enter the garden for free

to get these photographs ~ we could only be there about 15 minutes.

Someday, I would like to spend much more time there ~ it is a beautiful place.

RIetc2 s

RIetc1 s

Along the path to the hydrangeas, this statue graced the garden.

RIetc4 s

There were white oak-leaf hydrangeas  nearby . . .

RIetc7 s

RIetc9 s

. . . and pink hydrangeas  too.

RIetc3 s

RIetc8 s

  RIetc5 s

But I was most enamored by the blue ones.

RIetc11 s

RIetc13 s

We then crossed onto Hatteras Island, journeying toward the little town

of Salvo, where the house we were renting was located.

We stopped at the Salvo Day Use Area on Pamlico Sound

to see an old cemetery nearly hidden in the sand and sea vegetation,

surrounded by a weathered picket fence with a creaky old gate.

RIetc14 s

I wondered about the fate of these two little girls dying on the same day;

was it an epidemic?  an accident?

RIetc16 s    RIetc15 s

Many of the stones had the last name of Midgett on them.

Do any of you know the story here?

 RIetc21 s

Our family soon all arrived at the house and after unpacking,

we trudged over the sandy dune to the beach.

For some of our grandchildren, it was their first glimpse of an ocean . . .

RIetc23 s

. . . and baby J's first experience with the ocean sand.

RIetc22 s

It was such a joy to watch their excitement and enjoyment of the waves.

RIetc18 s

RIetc19 s

A brisk, ocean wind blew that evening ~ but there was promise of warm,

balmy days for the week ahead.  Our 2-year-old grandson joined his grandpa

in feeding the gulls  ~ he was so delighted by it all.

RIetc20 s

We soon headed back to the house for the night, so excited to know

that we had a whole week to enjoy and explore God’s creation in this place.

RIetc17 s

I simply never tire of the ocean ~ and I look forward to someday dwelling

in a heavenly place that the Bible says has a sea of crystal.

“And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal”

Revelation 4:6

Hydrangeas are some of my most favorite flowers and I'm very glad you were allowed 15 minutes in the garden to take pictures! I also find cemeteries a fascinating place of history. Great water pictures with the children! I take it your husband is doing well? I've been in and out of the Xanga loop since starting chemo.

One more question . . . Did you have any problem with Xanga when uploading your pictures? I have tried for the past 3 days with no success.

Looks like a great place!  What fun.  I hope someday we'll get there--it's been on our list for years.  And I love blue flowers...I suppose because they're so rare.  Very few flowers are truly blue.

Wonderful gull pictures -- and that looks like a wonderful house from which to enjoy the ocean and the beach!  Very different from our ocean, I imagine!

Hydrangeas are so beautiful!! I once dried a bunch and they lasted for a long long time. I love old cemeteries too -- We vacationed at a beach house farther south in NC (Holden Beach) in May and I just love the ocean too. Have a fantastic week!

Your site is EXACTLY what I needed today.  Those sounds of waves and birds and looking at the beautiful pictures - it should be on everyone's prescription list!  I REALLY want to go there now.  Have you ever been to the Xanga site:  http://iliveinmycamera.xanga.com/ ?  She has a photo contest just for Xanga people every week and then people vote.  You have to go to almost the bottom of the page to see where it says "New Assignment" to see what the new assignment is - duh, that makes sense.  You're a natural with your camera!  And no, it's not my site, I just like to go there and visit. :)  Have fun on your AWESOME vacation!

o wow, Im just a wee bit jealous...=) but so happy for you all, and that everything worked out okay for you to go.  loved the ocean pics, and your new profile one.  and the hydrangea pics made me want a bush again.  We had a huge old one at the first place we lived, and I planted one at the second place, and I've been thinking I need to add one to this place....

I too, love the blue hydrangeas, esp. the lacecap, but the color of the pink one is absolutely gorgeous!  It appears to have little pearls in the center of each little blossom.
