birthdays, etc.

part three

vbd 1 s

The last birthday we celebrated this spring was for a 5-year-old

granddaughter ~ she is beginning school this fall

and her mother used a kindergarten theme for her party.

vbd 2 s

Instead of birthday cake, we had a choice of birthday pies!

Her candles looked like Crayola crayons.

vbd 3 s

This was the highlight of her birthday gifts.

 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

One day, a couple of weeks ago, a couple of my relatives and I

went to a friend’s for the day ~ to visit, play games and have lunch.

This friend and her husband live along a ravine and are hosts

to a wide variety of birds and wildlife which

entertain them and their guests ~ right outside their big picture window.

bds 3 s

~ nuthatch ~

Of course, I took my camera ~ the birds distracted me all day long.

I was shooting through the window though, at a distance from a darkened room,

so the focus is not very sharp ~ hope you enjoy them anyway.

bds 11 s

~ goldfinches ~

bds 8 s

~ downy woodpecker ~

bds 12 s    bds 10 s

~ red-bellied woodpecker ~

bds 4 s

bds 7 s

~ cardinal ~

bds 9 s

~ rose-breasted grosbeak ~

bds 19 s

bds 1 s

bds 2 s

~ pileated woodpecker ~

These birds are sooooooo big!   They measure from 16-19 inches long!

I think they look like they are left over from the dinosaur age.

bds 13 s

A squirrel  perched on this round rock ~ when I snapped the picture,

he had his eyes shut ~ but actually, he was only there

for a few seconds ~ certainly not long enough for a nap.

bds 15 s     bds 14 s

Then apparently, he got thirsty ~

 bds 6 s

bds 16 s

~ Baltimore oriole ~

But my favorites to see at her house are the orioles ~ they have so many!

These are females . . .

bds 18 s

. . . and this is a male.

They love the grape jelly feeders  that our friend puts out for them.

My friend and I got beat 5 games out of 7; my camera wouldn’t focus on

the birds half the time ~ it wanted to focus on the trees instead,

but my, did we have a wonderful lunch and visit anyway.

Can’t wait till the next time ~ there is never enough time for friends and fun!

“A friend loveth at all times . . .”

Proverbs 17:17

Beautiful photos.  Enjoyed every one!  Those little birds are so sweet, they must are surely little creatures from God aren't they?  We have those huge red headed woodpeckers in our back yard from time to time, they are so pretty.  Those grape jelly feeders are fascinating, I've never seen anything like that before.  : )  Sounds like you are a busy gal with your family.

Blessings. : )

I'm so curious.  I have never seen the jelly feeders.  Is it homemade jelly?  Do you do something special to make it more liquid?  Where do you get the jars?

@gandywhite -

It is just cheap grape jelly from the grocery ~ the sun melts it a bit, I expect ~ you can use any old jar and rig it up ~ her husband put theirs together and made me one.

@fwren - It is the rigging the jar that looks difficult.  I think I'll give it a try.

What a nice fifth birthday party!! We have orioles in our yard this year but can't seem to get them to come to the orange halfs or jelly! Maybe we're not using grape jelly!! I'll have to check that out with hubby!!

Maybe you can take a picture of your grape jelly feeder so we can see how they are actually attached to the holder? has he drilled a hole in the jar at the bottom somehow?

I would love to have some bird feeders around here, but in an apartment complex, that is not possible. I am glad I can come here and enjoy your pictures. Blessings!

Mine is identical to the one in this post and yes, there are two holes drilled into the glass ~ he says he has trouble keeping the glass from cracking when he does that ~ a fine bit needs to be used, I imagine.  That wire is all one piece, just bent at the top and the little ring is usually at the top, then used to hang with ~ not sure why their's is hanging over the end of the jar here.  It needs to hang at an angle like this ~ good luck!

What a neat birthday party theme!  And your bird pictures are as wonderful as always -- nice depth of field, and the trees make a great contrasting background.  What a wonderful backyard your friend has!  I was intrigued, too, by the squirrel and his rock -- such a very round rock on top of one that looks like a turtle!  Thank you for a nice post.

I always enjoy your posts, they are refreshing.  I love that grape jelly feeder...I may have to put something together...what nice friends you have, to make you one as well!

The birthday parties are great fun!  I hosted a baby shower once and we did pies instead of cake.  It was #4 baby for this lady and we wanted to make it different!

I can't believe you can go visit your friends and see THAT MANY different kinds of birds over there!!!!!  How wonderful for them that they live at such a place - I sure hope I get a neat yard filled with wildlife one day (and I don't mean teenagers! ha ha).  Your pictures are just beautiful.  We have a store near us called Wild Birds, Unltd. - do you have anything like that?  It's so neat in there - it reminds me of your site.  They have soft music and little fountains going and bird noises and of course it's filled with all kinds of foods, and yard trinkets, and feeders, baths, etc.  Thanks for making us all feel much calmer after we visit here.  By the way, tell the party person that theme was just too darn cute!  What a neat idea!!

Howdy! I noticed that you stopped by the Campfire earlier, and I wanted to drop in and let you know that it was great to see you here, and you're welcome back anytime!

I loved the bird pictures. I didn't realize the woodpeckers would eat the peanuts out of the shells.
